Bands
The following are the bands and their descriptions for the 2011-2012 school year. Some of the bands are new configurations this year and I am excited to see the growth in the program!
Grade 4 - Grade 4 band is being offered this year as an exploratory option for students in grade 4. One class will come over to the Band room in IMS on Thursdays to recieve instruction on one of 3 instruments: Flute, Clarinet or Trumpet. Each student will try all three instruments for 4 classes. The instruments will be left in the band room as practice is not expected at this level. Please note that grade 4 students will not perform at any concerts this year.
Grade 5/6 - Grade 5's will also be beginners this year so they will start in Round 1 with beginner band. Their will be a beginner workshop held on September 17 to enrich the quality of playing and help the students get a successful start. The grade 6's will join them in round 2 to create a beginner/intermediate band that will perform in concerts together. They will meet every week on Tuesday and Friday during complimentary time.
Grade 7/8 - Grade 7 and 8 will be teamed up to create an intermediate band this year. Some grade 6's of sufficient ability will be asked to join this group as well. This will be an intermediate band playing harder music than that of the previous concert band. They will meet every week on Tuesdays and Fridays during complimentary time.
Senior Band - Grades 9-12 will make up this year's Senior Band. They meet once per week on tuesday evenings from 7-9:30pm. All concerts this year will be held on Tuesday evenings. This group will perform several concerts at the school and in the community and will be preparing for festivals and a tour in April of 2013.
Junior Jazz Band - Junior Jazz Band plays music from beginner to medium level and meets on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 8-8:30am. The emphasis is on learning new styles of music and the elements of jazz. There is a workshop in November for this group to help enrich the abilities of the students.
Senior Jazz Band - Senior Jazz Band plays music from medium to difficult and meets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:45-8:30am. The emphasis is on developing skills in the jazz idiom and experiencing many styles of music to broaden the perspective of the students. There is a workshop in November for this group to help enrich the abilities of the students.
Percussion Ensemble - This year there will be a percussion ensemble that will meet on Friday mornings from 8-8:30am. This group will work on specialized techniques for percussion ensemble and will play simple percussion ensemble music.
